Three seats on the Canton City Schools Board of Education were up for election on November 3, 2015.

Incumbent Will Grimsley ran unopposed and won re-election for the District 2 seat. Corey Smith and Eric Resnick defeated incumbent Ida Ross-Freeman, Deloris Angeli and Cody Horner for the two at-large seats that were up for election. At-large incumbent Lisa Gissendaner did not run for re-election.[1][2][3]

Canton City Schools is located in northeastern Ohio in Stark County. The county seat is Canton. According the United States Census Bureau, the county was home to 375,736 residents in 2014.[4] Canton City Schools was the 20th-largest school district in Ohio, serving 9,612 students during the 2012-2013 school year.[5]

Demographics

Stark County underperformed compared to the rest of Ohio in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 21.1 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 25.2 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $45,641, compared to $48,308 for the state. The poverty rate for the county was 15.0 percent, compared to 15.8 percent for the entire state.[4]

Voter and candidate information

The Canton City Schools Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Two members represent geographical districts, and the other three members represent the district at-large. Three seats were up for election on November 3, 2015, and the remaining two seats were up for election on November 7, 2017.

School board candidates had to file for this election with the Stark County Board of Elections by August 5, 2015. To vote in the election, residents had to register by October 5, 2015.[7]

Horner and Smith received an official endorsement from The Canton Repository.[8]

Horner also received an official endorsement from the General Truckdrivers and Helpers Teamsters Local Union No. 92.[9]
