Canyon County to hire attorney to help with civil cases
August 15, 2012
Idaho: Commissioners in Canyon County have found a way to help individuals representing themselves in civil cases: hire an attorney to provide assistance. Last month alone, in 800 cases residents participated in cases 'pro se', acting as their own representation. Those in the Third Judicial District identity this trend as a side effect of the recession.[1]
Under federal law, local court systems provide attorneys for individuals charged in criminal cases. This does not provide any help for those dealing with a civil matter, such as a divorce or custody issue.[1]
At $60,000 per year, an attorney well-versed in the law may help cases be resolved more efficiently, improving access for everyone in civil cases. This attorney will also ease the burden on the court assistance officer who currently helps with civil cases in the entire Third District.[1]
