I am a mom with 26 years of experience in policy and advocacy. I have advocated for issues in education, health care, domestic violence, trafficking, law enforcement, reentry, energy, and for seniors. I am hopeful that I can use this experience to craft meaningful solutions for our school system.
  • I support enhanced safety for students, teachers, and other staff. Too many teachers and administrators are being assaulted. Teachers have reported that 43% of teachers in their schools have been attacked. Many believe that this is a result of students not facing appropriate consequences.
  • We need more transparency for parents, teachers, school board members, and the community.
  • We need behavioral health solutions that include Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for teachers and staff. This training helps staff identify and respond to a mental health or substance abuse crisis.
Education, public safety, health care, energy, immigration, trafficking, domestic violence, reentry, and seniors.
I look up to my parents who were first responders. They taught me the importance of helping and advocating for others.
They should be engaged in the community, be an avid listener, and advocate for the people they represent. This includes spending taxpayer money wisely.
To ensure that all children have the best chance at a great public education. This includes providing a safe environment to learn.
All people in Guilford County, but primarily those who reside in district 5.
Guilford County is a very diverse area with rich history. We have over 120 languages spoken in our school system. We need to make sure that our language lines provide a way for kids and parents to communicate with teachers. We also need to help families get access to English as a Second Language (ESL ) classes.
I will continue to build relationships with groups and elected officials who support school safety, transparency for parents, and academic achievement for all students.
Children are coming to school with complex issues that need to be addressed. This is why I support Mental Health First Aid training for staff. We need to retain our teachers. Just like any other profession, teachers need to have a good work/life balance as well.
I think the school system needs an outside audit to see full transparency on spending. In addition, I would like all schools tested yearly by an outside company for mold, asbestos, and radon (with results being published to the public).
A safe learning space without cell phones in the classroom.
I think some rules were extreme. I did not agree with children wearing masks on the playground while running. I also did not agree with children being shielded from socializing at lunch.
I will encourage more parental involvement. In addition, I think quarterly town hall meetings would be a good way to connect with parents and grandparents.
