Carissa is a small town, country kid who grew up valuing hard work, education, community, and service. A professor at the University of Northern Iowa, she is the fourth generation in her family to teach. She became an healthcare and disability advocate after the birth of her second child, who was born with a rare, life-threatening medical condition. Carissa is an alum of the Lutheran Volunteer Corps and Americorps. She lives in Denver, IA, with her husband Adam, a family physician and public health expert, and three children.
  • HEALTHCARE: ensuring affordable quality access, reversing Medicaid privatization, building public & mental health
  • EDUCATION: fully fund public education, provide mental health
  • TOWNS AND RURAL COMMUNITIES: build our infrastructure (broadband, childcare, housing), support main street businesses, expand our rural economies
My second child was born with a rare, life-threatening medical condition. He does not breathe in his sleep and is dependent upon a ventilator to breathe for him. My family has lived through the privatization of Medicaid, which has put the health and well-being of our most vulnerable community members at risk. They are being denied care, placed in nursing homes rather than being home, and some have even died. All the while, out-of-state corporations are profiting. These aren't Iowa values. We don't put profits over the lives of our grandparents, sisters, and children. I am running to restore rural Iowan values in Des Moines.
My mom! My mom is the most resourceful, hardworking, caring person I know.
Elected officials must be good listeners. They must also build relationships.
To listen to their constituents, put everyday Iowans' values into practice, and be good stewards of common resources.
The Challenger explosion. I was in first grade. I also lived through 9/11 in DC at 22. I had just arrived to DC three weeks prior as an Americorps/Lutheran-Volunteer-Corps volunteer. My first-hand experiences with 9/11 affirmed my commitment to service and caring for my neighbor.
Overcoming political division to get things done for the greater good. Putting our values into practice.
