Carla Barnes is a judge of the Illinois 11th Circuit Court. She assumed office on February 11, 2021. Her current term ends on December 3, 2028.

She was appointed to the court on January 12, 2021 by the Illinois Supreme Court to replace Scott D. Drazewski and officially took office on February 11, 2021. Barnes is the first African American judge to serve in Illinois' Eleventh Judicial Circuit.[1][2]

Education

Barnes earned a bachelor’s degree at Illinois State University a J.D. from John Marshall Law School in Chicago.[1]

Career

Prior to serving on the bench, Barnes worked in the McLean County Public Defender’s Office, first as a Assistant Public Defender and later as the McLean County Chief Public Defender. Before joining the Public Defender’s Office, Barnes served as an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Cook County and McLean County States Attorney’s Offices.[2]
