Elections
2014
The August 26, 2014, general election in Palm Beach County featured four seats up for election. Only three of the races were decided in the general election. The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. Because no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in District 4, the top two vote recipients advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.
The District 4 race included newcomers Justin Katz, Larry F. Rosensweig, Thomas G. Sutterfield and Erica Whitfield. Whitfield advanced to the runoff election in first place. A recount was held to determine whether Sutterfield or Katz would advance to the runoff election in second place. Sutterfield's lead held and he advanced over Katz to the runoff election. Rosensweig, however, was defeated in the general election.
District 3, 6 and 7 races were determined in the general election. Karen Brill won re-election in District 3 against John Michael Hartman and David Benoit Mech. Incumbent Marcia Andrews defeated newcomers Carla Donaldson and Joe Moore in District 6. The District 7 race featured incumbent Debra L. Robinson who defeated challenger Piaget "Peppi" Hendrix.

Classrooms That Allow For Learning I know, it seems as though this should not be an issue, but believe it or not, our children do not always have the tools needed to succeed. Teachers are overwhelmed. Budgets are not allowing for materials, teacher assistants or any other much needed support to ensure that our children not only learn, but succeed. Our current school board does not even have measurable goals in place. I won't list all of the goals here, because it will take up too much space, but you are welcome to see for yourself by clicking here. Balanced and Properly Allocated Budget Under the current School Board leadership, a lot of time is wasted on small dollar amounts, yet quick decisions are made regarding large dollar expenditures. This seems to be the reverse of common sense thinking. Case in point, land was given to the School District just west of Lion Country Safari and it was recommended that a new School of the Arts be built there. Instead, $30 million dollars was spent to develop a school in the Glades that wasn't necessary. This decision should have been reviewed further before allocating funds to such a large project. Accountability Accountability is important in any leadership position, but when children are involved it requires an even higher standard. A lot of finger-pointing occurs under the current leadership and it doesn't represent the image of Palm Beach County Schools. We need serious leaders that stand behind their values and accept responsibility for the actions taken. Parental involvement is critical in this process. Parents must hold teachers, principals, the Superintendent and the School Board accountable. Accountability means being accessible to parents and other members of the community.[3] |
