I'm a recently retired Union pipeline inspector, USAF veteran, mom and grandmother who has resided in Fairview, WV for more than 32 years. I graduated from Eisenhower High School in Rialto, CA and after serving in the military and raising my family went back to school to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from Fairmont State University. I care deeply about our aging population, our veterans, and our children in West Virginia. I'm a founding member of the U.S. Hemp Building Association and volunteer at a local elementary school as a reader with Marion County Read Aloud WV. I was raised by a strong, independent retired R.N. who taught my siblings and myself that no matter one's station in life it costs nothing to be a friend and good neighbor. I enjoy reading, the outdoors, dogs (and sometimes cats), and most all genres of music. Most of all, I enjoy people.
  • Although we have a "part-time" legislature, I am in the unique situation of being able to be a "full-time" senator and can devote my time to helping my constituents year round.
  • Senate District 2 is as diverse as it is geographically large and I am ready to listen to every constituent to truly be "A Voice for ALL of Us".
  • I know that working together and by putting West Virginians first, we can move forward and make our state thrive for ourselves, our children, and their children. In the true Mountaineer spirit, by working together we can do this!
As a retired union worker I want to see prevailing wage be re-instated, Right to Work repealed, and public employees be granted collective bargaining rights.

I believe for our state to succeed we need to diversify our energy sector with solar, wind, and other alternative sources instead of putting all of our eggs in the coal and gas basket.
To bring in good jobs we need to repair and restore our roads and bridges, ensure we have strong, reliable broadband , and fully fund public education.
Instead of tax breaks for wealthy out of state corporations, we need to help our small business sector and focus on making agriculture a strong part of our economy.
We need to get the resources to keep fighting the battle against our addiction crisis, support our foster care and kinship families, and always protect the most vulnerable among us.

After all, that's what a good friend and neighbor does. That's what great Mountaineers do.
An elected official should live by the following principles: Show up and do the work, be honest, be transparent, be accountable to each and every constituent, West Virginian, and colleague. They should also be humble and kind yet strong enough to stand by their convictions. They should be willing to listen to differing viewpoints, be willing to compromise when necessary, and be human enough to admit to mistakes and be forgiven.
I would like to leave a legacy of being a senator who was smart, honest, strong, worked hard and served West Virginia and her people well.
I was in fourth grade when John Glenn made his historic space flight orbiting the earth. It was such a big deal, television sets were wheeled into our classrooms so we could watch. I've been fascinated by our space exploration since that day. So much so that when the first Rover landed on Mars I was inside glued to the TV instead of watching the local fireworks and attending to the party we were having for our daughter's birthday.
"Sometimes a Great Notion" by Ken Kesey because it shows what can be viewed as human character strengths can also be flaws and because Kesey always tells a great story. (full disclosure: I know his son and daughter-in-law)
No, I believe that a true representative government should consist of legislators from all walks of life. While a grasp of how governance works is indeed necessary, that knowledge doesn't necessarily need to come from previous experience. Two of the most knowledgeable people I know have little more than a high school education.
We are still in uncertain times with the current COVID-19 crisis that no one knows what challenges we will face in the aftermath. In addition all of our current issues and challenges will still need attention. Roads will need repaired, healthcare will need to be addressed, as our current population ages we also need to make West Virginia a place where our children can stay and thrive and raise their children. Clean water, clean, air, preserving the natural beauty of our state. It will take strong leaders not afraid to roll up their sleeves and do the work, ones who are not afraid to reach across the aisle and work in a bipartisan fashion to take on these challenges. Creating and adjusting to change, a necessary component of moving forward, while taking care not to minimize those who might fear the unknown. Finding the resources to make our future West Virginia be the best. I am confident that we have those willing to work hard and lead with love. I know I am ready for the task.
Absolutely, governance and legislation is not created in a vacuum. We are coming off a period of extreme divisiveness which has not served the people of West Virginia well. As humans we are meant to work together. Alone a board is just a board, a nail just a nail. Together they can become a house. We are always stronger and better together.

Candidate Connection

Carla participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Carla's responses follow below.[4]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Education

2) Infrastructure
3) Opioid Epidemic[5][6]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about repealing Right to Work because it is WRONG for West Virginia. Laws like this are just a thinly veiled attempt at union busting.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[6]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Carla answered the following:

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Fourth of July because my daughter was born on that day![6]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. To be a truly representative government we need ordinary citizens stepping up to the plate.[6]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
No.[6]
