Carley will serve as Chief Justice of Georgia Supreme Court
September 23, 2011
Georgia: The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously voted to make George Carley the Chief Justice for two months. During that time, the current Chief Justice Carol Hunstein, will step aside. The decision to elevate Carley to this position came after he announced that he would not seek re-election at the end of his term in 2012.[1]
After the vote, Carley said, "I am humbled beyond words that my colleagues have elected me to serve as Chief Justice. I am indebted to Chief Justice Hunstein for her selflessness in giving me this honor toward the end of my service to this great state."[1]
When he starts serving that role, Carley will be the first in the history of the state to serve as Chief and Presiding Justice of the Supreme Court and Chief and Presiding Judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals during his career.[2]
Georgia is one of twenty-one states in which the Chief Justice is selected by its peers. To see the full list, visit: this page.
