Commissioner Carly Cooke has served on the Guilford County Board of Commissioners since 2020. In this role, she has focused her efforts on support for Public Education, Infant Mortality, Early Childhood Environments, Small Business and Workforce pipeline, and Health Equity in our community. She serves on several committees including the Health and Human Services Advisory Board, the Joint Facilities Committee in concert with Guilford County Schools to collaborate on capital needs for K-12 public schools, and she is chairing the Transportation and Mobility work group to better understand how transportation can be a barrier in our community for our most vulnerable citizens. This year she was invited to be a Hunt Institute State Policy Fellow and was also appointed by the NC Association of County Commissioners to serve as chair of the Public Education Steering Committee. A resident of Guilford County for over 20 years, she attended UNCG for both her undergraduate degree in Business Administration and an MBA. After focusing on their small real estate business for many years, Carly’s involvement in her son’s elementary school led to an interest in broader advocacy for public education. This sparked a change in her path that ultimately led to public service as a Commissioner. She and her husband, Kevin, have two boys that keep them busy; most often at a ball field. When she isn’t working or watching youth sports, she loves reading, going to concerts, and traveling.
  • We must continue to invest in education from cradle to career and maintain support for the GCS facilities plan with the established funding model to ensure financial stability and consistent progress on schools.
  • Another key focus is to ensure all Guilford County residents have equitable access to essential healthcare and basic needs - especially for our most vulnerable residents; including primary and specialty care, behavioral health and substance use services, affordable housing, and food security.
  • We’ve been fortunate to experience significant economic growth in our area over the last few years and we will have to work to keep that momentum. We must assess and anticipate infrastructure needs to ensure our community can continue to thrive amid the economic growth.
Strong public education from cradle to career is fundamental to the success of a child and the community. I am passionate about working for increased support from the County for all levels of public education.
Honesty, transparency, humility, a willingness to listen and understand varying views and life experiences, and the ability to make difficult decisions when necessary.
I began working as a restaurant server at the age of 16 and continued through college. My time in the service industry taught me invaluable lessons about responsibility, a strong work ethic, and the challenges of running a small business. Above all, it reinforced the importance of treating others with dignity and respect.

Born in Alamance County, Carly Cooke is a proud graduate of UNC-Greensboro where she earned a degree in Business. After several years in the workforce, she returned to UNCG for a Master's in Business Administration, graduating with honors. Carly has spent the last ten years serving as an active volunteer in the community and Guilford County public schools, managing a small business with her husband, Kevin, and raising their two young children. She currently serves as a member of the Claxton Elementary PTA Board, a member of the Guilford Education Alliance Program Leadership Team, and as a member of the NC Museum of Natural Sciences Advisory Board.
  • North Carolina has a constitutional responsibility to provide quality public education to all children in our state. As Guilford County citizens, we have an even more specific responsibility to the children in our community. Guilford County School's budget has been underfunded for many years and we, as a community, are paying the price. I will prioritize investment in Guilford County Schools. I support a bond referendum to provide necessary funds to bring all GCS facilities up to the high standard our children deserve. Investing in public education is a foundational building block for a healthy economy and the future success of our community.
  • Economic Development must also be a priority. We have to make it a priority to attract and retain jobs in Guilford County that pay a livable wage and help support a strong local economy. Anyone working 40 hours should be able to support their family.
  • Equal Access to Essential Healthcare Services Every Guilford County citizen deserves equal access to health care - including behavioral health and addiction prevention.
Public education is my top priority along with health care services and a living wage to support Guilford County families.
