Recall reports

An effort in South Gate, California, to recall City Clerk Carmen Avalos from her position was launched in August 2015. Recall supporters served Avalos with an intent to recall in August 2015. The same group initially supported the removal of Avalos from the Cerritos College Board of Trustees, but the effort failed in June 2015 after signatures on the notice of intent were ruled invalid.[1][2] As of December 2015, this recall effort appeared to be abandoned and Ballotpedia discontinued active coverage. Recall supporters

The notice of intent to recall Avalos as city clerk cited the following grounds for recall:

  • Arriving late for city council meetings[3]
  • Lack of respect for speakers at meetings[3]
  • Inability to perform the duties of her office[3]

Response by Carmen Avalos

Avalos told the Los Angeles Wave that the renewed recall effort used the same wording from the trustee recall effort and featured exaggerations about her record.[2]

Recall supporters needed signatures from 20 percent of registered voters in the city within 120 days of the city's approval of their recall petition.[2] South Gate City Manager Mike Flad would have overseen the recall election because the city clerk was the target of the petition. Flad estimated a $300,000 price tag for a recall election including outside consulting to assist the city with the election in the absence of the clerk.[3]
