Carmen Ayala
Carmen Ayala was the Illinois Superintendent of Education. Ayala assumed office on February 26, 2019. Ayala left office on January 31, 2023.
Biography
Before becoming state superintendent of education, Ayala was the superintendent of Berwyn North School District 98. She previously served as an assistant superintendent for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, Illinois. She was also a director in Community Consolidated School District 300 and an assistant superintendent, director of bilingual services, and teacher in Aurora East School District 131. Ayala began her career as a teacher at Chicago Public Schools, where she worked for five years.[1]

Superintendent of education (2019-2023)
Ayala was appointed as Illinois superintendent of education by the State Board of Education, effective February 26, 2019. She replaced superintendent Tony Smith.[1]
About the office
The Illinois Superintendent of Education is a state executive position in the Illinois state government. The superintendent works with the state board of education to provide leadership, assistance, resources, and advocacy so that students are prepared to succeed in careers and postsecondary education and shares accountability for doing so with districts and schools.[2]
