Carmen Cerezo was a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. She joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Prior to joining the court, Cerezo was a commonwealth appeals judge for the Puerto Rico Court of Intermediate Appeals.[1]

Cerezo retired on February 28, 2021.[2]

Education

Cerezo earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Puerto Rico in 1963. She earned a J.D. from the University of Puerto Rico Law School in 1966. Cerezo earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.[1]

Professional career

Cerezo began her legal career as an attorney in private practice. She served as a law clerk for the District of Puerto Rico from 1967 to 1972. In 1972, Cerezo became a judge for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Superior Court. Four years later, she became a Commonwealth Appeals Judge for the Puerto Rico Court of Intermediate Appeals.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

District of Puerto Rico

On the recommendation of the Puerto Rican at-large Congressional delegation, Cerezo was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on May 14, 1980, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Cerezo was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 26, 1980, on a voice vote and received commission on June 30, 1980.[1]

Cerezo retired on February 28, 2021.[2]
