Why are you running for office?
“ |
I value public education. I believe that strong public schools are the foundation of communities. I believe that every child deserves an excellent education. Education is changing and so is our school district. The school board, together with administrators and teachers, needs to respond proactively to today’s students and their world. If elected, I will be forward-thinking and open to more effective ways of educating every child. I am committed to service. During the 15 years that my three children attended NJSD schools K-12, I have volunteered as a Neenah Music Parents board member, in classrooms, for boys cross country, in the Coolidge PTO, as a crossing guard, and more. In the wider community, I have served as a literacy tutor, a volunteer at First Congregational UCC, and an interviewer-writer at the Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison. My professional life has aligned closely with education. I have worked in academic textbook publishing for 30 years in sales, marketing, editing, and writing. In 2015, I joined Fox Valley Technical College as an adjunct instructor, where I teach courses in business writing and college composition.[5] |

What do you think are the key issues facing the community?
“ |
Students in NJSD schools have increasingly diverse needs. Meeting the needs of all NJSD students is crucial, regardless of students’ background or preparation. The Neenah community is presently discussing updating its school buildings. This ambitious and much-needed project offers opportunities for improving facilities at all grade levels. The project will involve engaging the entire community in a conversation about the value of our public schools. Like all public schools in Wisconsin, NJSD faces budgetary stresses caused, in part, by decisions made outside the district’s control. I will advocate at every opportunity on behalf of educators and children in our public schools. Like school districts across the U.S., NJSD is concerned about school safety. The School Board needs to support measures to make school buildings as safe as possible while keeping them welcoming spaces. I believe that school board members also need to advocate for additional, common sense measures that will reduce the likelihood of violence occurring within school buildings.[5] |

What do you hope to accomplish, if elected?
“ |
If I am elected, I will work toward promoting an excellent education for every child in the district, improving graduation rates, attracting and retaining high-quality teachers and staff, updating and renovating NJSD school buildings, and raising awareness of the importance of strong public schools in our community.[5] |
