Expand all | Collapse all

I am a rural physician practicing alongside my husband in our clinic in Palestine, Texas. I served as Mayor of Palestine from 2005 to 2009 and have proudly called Anderson County home since 1991. My mother was a dedicated Texas public school educator, and my father worked in the oil industry, instilling in me a deep respect for hard work and community. I am running to save Texas public schools and rural hospitals, expand access to healthcare in East Texas, restore voter control in local government, protect women’s rights, and promote innovative economic development. I believe in empowering local entrepreneurs with the same financial incentives and tax breaks often reserved for large out-of-town businesses, recognizing that small businesses are the true lifeblood of our economy.
  • Save Texas Schools-Vouchers threaten Texas Schools and my opponent now supports them with Governor Abbott. Teachers deserve better pay and benefits. Texas public schools are woefully underfunded. Our children deserve better. Our kids are the future! Rural public schools underpin the local economy with jobs and workforce training.
  • Expand Medicaid to improve access to care by children, mothers, and seniors and save rural hospitals from financial distress and more hospital closures.
  • Restore local control to city and county governments. Small and large city governments have lost the ability to regulate the character of their communities and local businesses due to state government removal of local control. Out of town corporations have more control than local folks.
I have been active in restoring and preserving local history and architecture. I believe in stewardship of our cities and towns and our environment. We need healthy cities for a promising future. We also need to address affordable housing, innovative economic development that is sustainable and looks to the future.
Hon. John Bryant has set an excellent example in the legislature. However, most of the time I follow my own chosen path in life.
Although it is rather distant in time now, looking back on my service as Palestine Mayor is the best indicator of my philosophy put into action. I stand by my record.
Intelligence, honesty, integrity, compassion, accessibility to the constituents on a regular basis. A true dedication to public service and not self-interest.
I don't give up. I can work with people I don't really like or agree with. I am innovative and look for out-of-the-box solutions.
Attend to the business of legislation with constituents in mind. Listen to constituents and be responsive to the needs of your district.
I will be in the local history books as the first woman mayor of Palestine. I am satisfied with that.
My first real job was my internship after medical school in Portland Oregon. It was a rotating surgical internship and lasted a year. I worked from 80 to 120 hours a week. I got 2 weeks of vacation, at which time I got married to my current husband.
Dune by Frank Herbert. It is about power and vision and is one of the most well written sci-fi books ever I read. I also loved Pillars of the Earth for the same reason.
I can't really imagine wanting to be any fictional character, but Captain Janeway on Voyager might be a hoot.
I can't remember. I get ad jingles sometimes, but don't get earworms often for any song.
I have not been able to get my weight at my desired goal (since the baby, who is now over 35, shall we say). This is such a small thing that I hate to mention it. I have been very blessed in life.
The governor is not in charge of legislation and the legislature. It is a separate branch of government and should be equal in power and provide a check to executive overreach of power.
The consequences of a rapidly growing population and limited natural resources. Balancing economic growth with keeping a healthy environment.
Yes, it is helpful to understand how politics and governmental subdivisions work and to have relationships in the local community.
It is important to build consensus among legislators of both parties, assuming the primary concern of all parties is the welfare of the communities and constituents in their respective districts. Good relationships based on mutual respect and understanding of facts, and the benefits of legislation, can help cross party lines and move legislation forward. It is a complex system to get legislation enacted. It takes coalitions to make change.
The legislator I admire most currently in office is Hon. John Bryant. I would endeavor to be as independent-minded and bold as a legislator.
Most of the stories I hear are about people failing to access healthcare and having to choose between food and medicine. I can't discuss specifics as it may violate confidentiality.
So an ion walks into a bar and tells the bartender, "hey I may have lost an electron." Bartender asks in reply, "are you sure?" Ion answers, "yeah, I'm positive."
It should certainly oversee the use of such power and expenditures associated with it.
Texas Classroom Teachers Association and The Texas Progressive Caucus. I am not curently seeking additional endorsements.
Healthcare, public health, health and human services, environmental, land use, county affairs
All governmental activity should be transparent and accountable to the taxpayers. There is too much influence of big money in government both on the legislature and on state-wide elected officials.
I believe it should be allowed in Texas. Voters should not have to go through the legislature and governor to get a vote of the people. It is currently not an option for the voters.
