Candidate Connection

Carrie Blackwood completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Blackwood's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My number one priority is matching our response to the climate crisis to the urgency of the situation. We absolutely have to take the science seriously and incorporate planning for this transition into all aspects of government. We don’t have time to waste and we need to get serious now. My second biggest priority is tackling our deepening economic inequality. This is a multi faceted and systemic issue, but I have two areas of particular focus. We need to change the fact that we have the most regressive tax code in the nation and the vast majority of our residents are shouldering an unfair tax burden with unsustainable property and B and O taxes. The wealthiest among us are not paying a fair share and we need to change that so funding our public infrastructure doesn’t make living in this state unaffordable. We also have to tackle our growing housing crisis. I firmly believe that housing is a human right and we have to have the political will to ensure that everybody can have access to a home. We need to invest in affordable housing while also taking steps to ensure that people can keep the housing they already have. On the flip side we must work to raise wages for those earning the least and bring meaningful work into our communities by investing in the transition to clean energy.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

The pursuit of a just and equitable society that serves us all is what drives me to seek election. For too long our policy making process has been dominated by corporate interests who seek profit at the expense of our communities. I’m running because I’m quite comfortable standing up to powerful interests on behalf of the will of the majority and I believe people are ready to change the status quo. Throughout my career as a professional negotiator and attorney representing unions I’ve always been focused on ensuring that every person’s needs are heard and incorporated into what we are fighting for. I’m passionate about deepening our democracy and ensuring that our communities are at the table and part of the policy making process.
