Carter Smith was a candidate for Superward 6 representative on the Norfolk School Board in Virginia. He was defeated in the general election that was held on May 3, 2016.[1]

Smith was the only newcomer to run for the school board in its first elections in over 60 years. A 2014 referendum called for an elected school board to replace the formerly appointed one. Smith is the owner and managing partner of Northfield Medical Manufacturing. He also is a partner at Madison Hill Partners. He has had a variety of business experiences throughout his career. He earned a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Virginia. Smith has volunteered with after-school programs, tutoring programs, summer enrichment programs, local PTA's, and \outh sports since he moved to Norfolk in 2000.[2]

Two of the seven seats on the school board were up for general by-district election. Incumbent Noelle Gabriel defeated Carter Smith for the Superward 6 seat. Incumbent Rodney Jordan ran unopposed and won the seat in Superward 7.[1]

Smith reported $49,670.22 in contributions and $49,325.41 in expenditures to the Virginia Department of Elections, which left his campaign with $344.81 during the election.[3]
