Cary Douglas Pugh is an Article I federal judge for the United States Tax Court. She joined the court in 2014 after a nomination from President Barack Obama.[1]
Early life and education
Pugh is a native of Virginia. In 1987, she earned her bachelor's degree from Duke University, magna cum laude. In 1988, she earned her master's degree from Stanford University. In 1994, she earned her J.D., Order of the Coif, from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1994. During a period of her legal studies, she served as executive editor of the Virginia Law Review.[1]

Pugh was nominated by President Barack Obama on June 9, 2014, to a seat on the United States Tax Court vacated by Robert Wherry. Hearings on Pugh's nomination were held before the Senate Finance Committee on July 16, 2014, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) on July 31, 2014. Pugh was confirmed on a voice vote on November 20, 2014, and she received her commission on December 16, 2014, to serve a 15-year term on the court.[1][2]
