Campaign themes

2017

Goodman's campaign website included the following themes:

Save our Park
In an era of climate crisis, in a neighborhood with filthy air, we need to cherish and preserve every green space, every tree in every public park. However, the Museum of Natural History and the incumbent Council member want to clear-cut dozens of trees and destroy a part of Teddy Roosevelt Park.

In place of the green space, they plan to build a giant, fossil-fueled building which will add tons of pollution to our air every year. In a city with a gross inequality of cultural resources, it doesn't make sense for taxpayers to subsidize another Manhattan museum.

For almost two years, I have opposed this land grab. I have picketed, protested and petitioned -- to no avail. Now I'm running for City Council to replace the elected official who has steered this project for the museum. If elected, I will reject the museum's application, freeze the public funding and begin a community conversation on next steps.

Educational Apartheid
We need to replace the incumbent with someone who is familiar with the day-to- day humiliations of apartheid schools. I taught for eleven years in the public schools of the South Bronx and East Harlem. My children went to PS 9, 84 and The Computer School. On the other hand, the incumbent never taught and sends her children to private school where each child is honored and nurtured not demeaned and damaged.

We need a City Council rep with the courage to acknowledge the segregation and degradation of the current system. We need someone who has led campaigns on behalf of public school students and against educational neglect.

The Legacy Stores Act
If you walk up and down Columbus, Amsterdam or Broadway you'll notice dozens of empty storefronts. They are relics of rapidly rising rents and impossible lease renewal rates.

I've got a plan to support businesses like Zingone's, Barney Greengrass and Park West Pharmacy. I've got a strategy to reduce and prevent small business closures, The Legacy Stores Act.[2][3]
