Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Cason Gardner, and I am running for Cabarrus County Commissioner. Known to my friends and family as "Coach" for my passion for sports, I am a native of Concord and a lifelong resident of Cabarrus County. I graduated from Catawba College with honors in 2024 with a Bachelor's in Economics & Finance. I began my career as a financial analyst at a Concord startup soon after & ran for Concord City Council in 2025. I have been very active in government at the local, state, & national levels since I was in middle school. As part of my involvement, I have organized meetings with numerous government officials, including former Concord Mayor Scott Padgett and US Congressman Richard Hudson. I have also lobbied for bills to state representatives in Raleigh, participated in mock general assemblies at the State Capitol, served for 4yrs as a member of the Cabarrus County Youth Commission through high school, campaigned for numerous candidates running for local, state, & national offices, and was a National Finalist in the 2024 Future Business Leaders of America Parliamentary Procedure competition.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

• Our Founding Fathers said "government was for the people, by the people, and of the people", that is a message that no longer works if the people are no longer involved in their government. For a long time, we have been told that "you don't need to worry, the government will take care of you.", this has not worked for a long time. I want to boost community involvement with their elected officials and bring back government accountability & transparency. This means working to end closed sessions, inviting community members to join our work sessions, & making regular updates on social media about the decisions the county board of commissioners makes.
• Cabarrus County is the 6th most expensive county in North Carolina with 28% of residents considered cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. Our budget & taxes are out of control, I will work to balance the county budget & reduce taxes on our residents by working with my fellow commissioners to cut tax breaks to businesses, slow growth to more manageable levels, consolidate wasteful spending & redundancies, cut funding to underperforming county-funded programs, & redirect funding to more efficient programs.
• As this county continues to grow, we need to work with our county's municipalities & state officials to slow our growth to a more manageable pace until our roads, schools, sewer, & other key infrastructure are upgraded to handle anticipated growth. Forced growth means higher taxes & lower quality of living, we must work towards building for anticipated growth before we are crushed by a population size our infrastructure cannot handle if we want Cabarrus County to continue thriving & become the greatest county in the nation.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

The areas of public policy that I am most passionate about are taxes, schools, and infrastructure. Our taxes are getting far too high due to past budget issues & the budget must be balanced so we can lower taxes & stop people from being priced out of their homes. The Cabarrus County School System is full of outdated & overcrowded buildings that need to be updated & expanded, we also need to work on school policies, such as to keep boys out of girls' locker rooms. Finally, we need to work with state officials to repair our roads & upgrade other key infrastructure, such as sewer, throughout our county.
