Catherine Heise
Catherine Heise is a judge of the Michigan 3rd Circuit Court. Her current term ends on January 1, 2031.
Heise ran for re-election for judge of the Michigan 3rd Circuit Court. She won in the general election on November 5, 2024.
Education
Heise received her undergraduate degree in economics from Wayne State University in 1984 and her J.D. from the Detroit College of Law in 1988. She was credentialed as a chartered property casualty underwriter (CPCU) in 2014.[1][2]
Career
Prior to her appointment to the 3rd Circuit Court, Heise was an attorney for the Amerisure Insurance Co. practicing in the area of insurance and civil defense litigation. She served as a case evaluator with the Mediation Tribunal Association and as a member of the council of the Insurance and Indemnity Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, as well as serving as a specialty board editor for the Journal of American Law. From 2003 to 2006 Judge Heise served as council member for the City of Dearborn Heights.[2][1]

Selection method

The 221 judges of the Michigan Circuit Courts are selected in an identical manner, each serving six-year terms. They are chosen in nonpartisan elections and must face re-election if they wish to continue serving. Candidates are placed on the ballot via nonpartisan primaries or by nominating petitions.[4] Sitting judges who reach age 70 are allowed to serve out the remainder of their term.[5]
Selection of the chief judge
The chief judges of the circuit courts are appointed by the state supreme court to two-year terms.[4]
Qualifications
To be elected to either of these courts, a judge must:[4]
- be a qualified elector of his or her district;
- be licensed to practice law in the state;
- have at least five years of law practice experience; and
- be under the age of 70.
