Catherine Ramsey was a 2016 candidate for the 8th Judicial District Court in Nevada.[1] She was defeated in the primary election on June 14, 2016.[1]

Ramsey is a municipal court judge in North Las Vegas. An effort to recall her from that position was launched in March 2015. Proponents submitted the necessary amount of signatures, but Ramsey filed a petition for an emergency injunction to put a stop to the recall attempt against her. She claimed that the Nevada Constitution does not allow recall of judges and that the recall effort against her was illegal. Clark County District Court Judge Louis Eric Johnson, whom she challenged in the 2016 election, ruled against her, declaring that the power of recall does extend to judges in Nevada. Ramsey appealed the district court decision to the Nevada Supreme Court.[2]

In August 2016, Ramsey reached a settlement with the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline in which she was suspended without pay for the final three months of her term and prohibited from seeking re-election in 2017.[3]

Each district court selects its chief judge to a two-year term by peer vote. Not every district court is required to select a chief judge; only in districts with populations over 100,000 are the courts required to choose one.[6]
