An effort to recall all five members of the Cave Creek Unified School District Governing Board did not go to a vote in 2022. The effort failed to qualify for the ballot.[1]
The recall effort began in September 2021. Scott Brown, Janet Busbee, Jeff Fortney, Beth Hatcher, and Brianna Lynn Walker were named in the recall petitions. To get the recalls on the ballot, supporters would have had to submit petitions with 6,646 signatures for each member by January 14, 2022.[2][3]
Busbee won re-election to a four-year term on the board on November 3, 2020. Fortney and Walker were first elected to the board in the same election. The three members received 19%, 18.1%, and 18% of the vote, respectively, in the six-way at-large race. Hatcher and Brown were first elected to four-year terms on the board on November 6, 2018. Hatcher received 41.9% of the vote, and Brown received 34.1% of the vote in the three-way at-large race.
Recall supporters
All five applications for recall petitions contained the following grounds for recall:[2]
“ | Cave Creek community members are petitioning to recall the entire CCUSD governing board on the basis of malfeeasance. Stakeholders interests are not being represented resulting in tremendous enrollment and revenue loss. In excess of $1 million dollars was lost in a single school this year alone.[4] | ” |

Cave Creek Unified School District is located in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is classified as a mid-sized city school district by the National Center for Education Statistics. The district served 5,396 students during the 2018-2019 school year and comprised eight schools.[5]
During the 2018-2019 school year, 7.2% of the district's students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, 1.2% were English language learners, and 14.3% of students had an Individual Education Plan (IEP).[6]
