Four seats on the Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education were up for general election on September 8, 2015.

Incumbent Mary Meisterling ran unopposed and won re-election to her seat in District 1. In District 4, incumbent Allen Witt was defeated by challenger Rafael Jacobo. The race for the two available at-large seats included incumbents John Laverty and Ann Rosenthal along with challengers Todd Cohenour and Kristin Janssen. Laverty and Janssen won the two at-large seats.[1][2][3]

Cedar Rapids Community School District is located in east-central Iowa in Linn County. The city of Cedar Rapids is the county seat. The county was home to 217,751 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] Cedar Rapids Community School District was the second-largest school district in Iowa, serving 17,120 students during the 2012-2013 school year.[5]

Demographics

Linn County outperformed the rest of Iowa in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found 31.2 percent of county residents over 25 had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 25.7 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $57,260 compared to $51,843 for the state. The county had a poverty rate of 9.7 percent, while the rate for the rest of the state was 12.4 percent.[4]

Voter and candidate information

The Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Four members represent geographical districts, and three members are elected at-large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held September 8, 2015. Four seats were up for election in 2015: District 1, District 4 and two at-large seats.[2][7]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was July 30, 2015. To vote in the election, residents had to register by August 28, 2015.[7]

Laverty, Jacobo and Janssen received endorsements from the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor and the Cedar Rapids Education Association.[8][9]

Jacobo and Janssen also received an endorsement from The Gazette.[10]
