Judge Cedric Simpson was ordered by the Michigan Supreme Court to serve a nine-month suspension without pay for interfering in the police investigation of his intern, who was arrested for driving under the influence in 2013.[5]

The Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission (JTC) filed a formal complaint against Simpson in November 2014, alleging that Simpson interfered with the field sobriety test on the night Vargas was arrested and asked the city attorney to delay issuing an arrest warrant for Vargas until she could obtain a lawyer.[5]

In August 2015, recommended that he be removed from the bench. That December, the supreme court granted a motion to move the case back to the JTC to consider new evidence. The commission, however, reaffirmed its recommendation of removal in March 2016.[6][7]

The supreme court heard arguments in the case on October 6, 2016. In July 2017, the court ordered Simpson to pay a $7,565 fine and serve a nine-month suspension without pay, effective immediately.[8][9]
