OpenSecrets (OS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that tracks money in American politics through its website OpenSecrets.org. The organization assembles and publishes data on campaign finance, political contributions, special interest group spending, lobbying and the personal finances of government officials. The organization also publishes regular analytical reports on political finance and supports others writing about the subject.[1]

Background

U.S. Sens. Frank Church (D-Idaho) and Hugh Scott (R-Penn.) founded the organization in 1983 as "a non-partisan research and public education institute focusing on making Congress more responsive to the American people."[2] Founded as the Center for Responsive Politics, the organization rebranded to OpenSecrets in 2021.[3]

As of September 2025, the organization's mission was "to serve as the trusted authority on money in American politics. We pursue our mission by providing comprehensive and reliable data, analysis and tools for policymakers, storytellers and citizens. Our vision is for Americans to use data on money in politics to create a more vibrant, representative and responsive democracy."[1]

OpenData Initiative

OS launched the "OpenData Initiative" in 2009 to make its data archives more widely available and easier to use. OpenSecrets.org features online software for analyzing and presenting OS data as well as tools for developers and content producers. All of the center's data is free to download and use for non-commercial purposes, as long as the organization is properly credited.[6]
