The race for Illinois' U.S. Senate seat was one of nine competitive battleground races in 2016. U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D) defeated incumbent Mark Kirk (R)—who was seeking re-election to his second term—Kenton McMillen (L), and Scott Summers (G) in the general election on November 8, 2016.

In her victory speech, Duckworth said, “Tonight, we showed a campaign that respects voters and is focused on practical solutions rather than shopworn slogans can be successful. We showed that a relentless focus on rebuilding Illinois’ middle class and respecting hard worth rather than wealth can be successful, too.”[3]

During his concession speech, Kirk said, "What unites us as Americans is much stronger than what divides us." Kirk also invited Duckworth to have a beer with him as a peace offering. He said, “This beer summit with [sic] show kids across Illinois that opponents can peacfully [sic] bury the hatchet.”[3][4]

Numerous analysts labeled Kirk the most vulnerable GOP incumbent in 2016 due to Illinois' tendency to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats during presidential election cycles. Kirk faced significant opposition from national Democrats who targeted Illinois as an essential seat needed to regain the majority in the U.S. Senate. Democrats picked up two seats in Election Day, but they fell short of the five seats that they needed to take control of the Senate.[5]

Campaign website

Koppie’s campaign website stated the following:

Budget & Economy
Chad Koppie promises to do more than spout platitudes of shrinking government spending and cutting taxes, and FIGHT to pass legislation that cuts ALL goverment spending 3% per year for 10 years. Every single program. Every employee. This will cause people to reevaluate what is truly necessary while reigning in cost.

Cut spending and balance the budget
  • Not to shock the system - Congress should cut spending, for each expenditure, by 3%, per year, until the budget is balanced.
  • Cut salaries of federal offices to be in line with the public sector.
Jobs / Small Business
  • Fight for a free market economy and real competition.
  • Fight to end corporate welfare and government discrimination against small business.

Civil Liberties
Stop the encroachment of Federal Government into our lives.
Protect American liberty and independence.
Defend and preserve religious freedom.

Gun Rights
Stand up and fight for the Second Amendment.
Chad supports the 2nd Amendment and is a lifetime member of the NRA.

Drug Wars
Federal government does not have the authority to implement drug laws without a Constitutional Amendment. Drug laws are a state issue.

Education
The Constitution grants the Federal Government absolutely no authority over Education; therefore, the 10th Amendment applies: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Local Control
Eliminate the National Dept of Education and return the control of the schools to the local level.

  • Stop Common Core!

Family
Protect and defend life.
Protect traditional marriage.

Foreign Policy
Defend U.S. Sovereignty.
End Foreign Aid - Put America first.

Health Care
Making Health Care affordable again

  • Repeal Obamacare

Limited Government

Immigration (Reform)
Amnesty

  • Preserve the Rule of Law - NO Amnesty.

The Kelly (Governor) - Koppie team will strive to repeal the law that allows illegal aliens to get driver's licenses and the law that allows illegal aliens to attend state universities and pay in-state tuition

Sanctuary Cities/State
Aiding and abetting illegal aliens is a felony. Cracking down on "Sanctuary Cities" is a must to get the illegal alien problem under control. Sanctuary cities not only violate federal laws, but also violate the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution clearly delegates the power to make uniform immigration rules to the U.S. Congress.

The Kelly - Koppie team will strive to repeal (5 ILCS 805/Illinois Trust Act) that essentially turns IL into a Sanctuary State by preventing local law enforcement to work with Federal Immigration. They will work with Federal Immigration departments to help solve the illegal problem.

  • HB3698 SANCTUARY STATE ACT

The Kelley - Koppie team strongly oppose the Sanctuary State Act and will do everything in their power to block this unconstitutional bill and/or repeal it should it get passed prior to them taking office.

National Security
American Sovereignty
Election Reform
Energy Policy
Sanctity of Life
Taxation / IRS
Abolish the Federal Reserve and the IRS
