Job ONE: Economic Development Manufacturing, Agriculture, Entrepreneurship & Buying Local Promoting manufacturing and developing infrastructure and resources to support the development of manufacturing in the district is a key component for economic development. Manufacturing requires skilled labor and pays higher wages while creating additional jobs through the supply chain. New York State has a rich manufacturing history and the next great chapter is waiting to be written. We can improve our local economies by promoting locally made and sourced products and consumer activities. American Made products made in upstate New York infuse capital into our local economies. Consumers are a critical component as well. Dollars spent on American Made products and spent at locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on the community as dollars spent at national chains. Public Education, Job Training & Student Loan Debt Job training opportunities are key. By building on the success of programs like YouthBuild and increasing access to community colleges, with a focus on job placement after graduation, upstate New York can build and retain a skilled workforce. College student loan debt is the next economic crisis in America. Seven in 10 seniors who graduated from public and nonprofit colleges in 2013 had student loan debt averaging $28,400 per borrower. Aside from making college more affordable, more college students need to have access to loan forgiveness programs. Privatizing public education is not the answer. By increasing both tax incentives and funding for charter schools in Upstate New York, the legislature and the governor are creating the "tale of two cities on the hill" which former Governor Mario Cuomo fought so hard against. Rather it's time to fully fund public schools and ensure they have the resources they need for youth to succeed. Inequality & Discrimination Income Inequality - when our elected official (Senator H. Farley) makes three times the average salary of the district he serves. Criminal Justice - when people of color make up 75 percent of the New York State prison population. Poverty - when your race can predict your likelihood of living in poverty. Thirty-five percent of black and 31 percent of Hispanic children live in poverty in the U.S. Choice - Despite 85 percent of New York women supporting "a woman’s right to make private health care decisions regarding pregnancy," the New York State Senate refuses to pass the 10th point of the Women's Equality Agenda, which would codify choice. Human Rights - The New York State Senate has failed to pass the Gender Expression Non Discrimination Act (GENDA) which would extend basic human rights protections to Transgender New Yorkers. Thanks to the bold action of Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2015 our Transgender brothers and sisters will be protected via an Executive Order. Although this is progress, GENDA must be passed in the NYS Legislature to codify these protections for generations to come. [1] |
