Florida: The Judicial Qualifications Commission has filed charges against Paul Hawkes, judge of the Florida First District Court of Appeal. The charges stem from Hawkes' role in the construction of a new courthouse for the First District Court, a building that critics refer to as the "Taj Mahal".[1]

In the notice filed with the Florida Supreme Court, Hawkes is accused of:

  • Destroying public documents related to construction;
  • Using a court employee for a private matter;
  • Requesting gifts from private vendors; and
  • "Using a 'coercive and intimidating leadership style'".[1]

Hawkes' lawyer responded to the allegations by saying, "Judge Hawkes was at all times acting in what he firmly believed to be the best interests of the state, the judiciary and the court on which he serves. We are preparing a vigorous defense against all charges."[1]

The judge has twenty days to respond to the allegations and if he disputes them, will face trial later in the year. Ultimately, the Supreme Court will make the final decision regarding the judge's future on the court.[1][2]
