Candidate Connection

Charlene Pyskoty participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 7, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Charlene Pyskoty's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Behavioral health treatment

Reduce crime

Supportive housing for the homeless[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

With Masters' degrees in Public Health and Mental Health Counseling, I am dedicated to providing creative and cost-effective initiatives to prevent problems from occurring; eliminating suffering and wasteful time, effort, and money on crisis management; and building a better quality of life for the community.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Charlene Pyskoty answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

Tammy Duckworth, Democrat, US Senator for Illinois, is an Iraq War veteran who received the Purple Heart after losing both legs when the Black Hawk helicopter she co-piloted was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. She has been a tireless advocate for veterans and human services. She is the first senator to have given birth while in office. Born in Thailand, she has dedicated her life to serving the American people.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
"Healing the Heart of Democracy" by Parker Palmer offers a perspective that urges Americans to move past divisive politics to focus on working together to improve our country and our communities in creative ways that bring a diversity of strengths together. As a mental health therapist, I see that the heart of our body politic is broken, and I am committed to doing my part to heal it.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
It's important for elected officials to be curious and open to a wide range of perspectives and suggestions. It's important to listen and know the community. It's important to do research, learn from the past, know current situations, and come up with creative solutions. As a mental health therapist, I help people assess their past and current situations and then come up with positive, creative solutions. I will bring this to the county commission, and serve my community on a greater level.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
The best part of being home is being able to look out my window at my three horses. They are my natural stress relievers![3]
Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?
The Bernalillo County Commission votes on issues that affect residents in their everyday lives. The Commission has an overall management function in zoning and infrastructure, public health and safety, elections and appointments, and more. Decisions made by the County Commission impact individuals daily, and should be made with the best interests of the community in mind.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
Rather than political experience, a County Commissioner should have real-world experience. The ideal commissioner will come from a broad range of educational and work experience and have a proven track record of listening respectfully and responding positively, creatively, and in a way that uplifts the community. The ideal commissioner will put community above personal gain or political aspiration or allegiance.[3]
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
I believe that my training and experience in mental health and public health, combined with my background in a military and law enforcement family, make me uniquely and highly qualified to be the next Bernalillo County Commissioner of District 5.[3]
