What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
I am passionate about all aspects of our health care in part because our costs are some of the highest in the country. Too many people in this district have to choose between health care and housing or meals. Additionally, and this will drastically impact our health care issues, is the funding inequity and cut backs to our public schools. Without educators what will we do in 25 years for nurses and skilled care workers? Raising our minimum wage and creating new innovative sustainable jobs is a top priority. Working with and for the people of this district is my passion.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
To me, Public policy is the overriding principal of doing what is best for the greatest number of people. Aspects that affect us all are health and safety, crime and punishment, education and land use. Each of these are like the spokes of a wheel--interdependent and necessary.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
My heroes are Eleanor Roosevelt and Margaret Mead who both studied and helped humanity. Politically, I will always admire William Proxmire, Gaylord Nelson and JFK. My father Donald M. Warner heads this list as he introduced me to Senator Proxmire and Governor Nelson and took me to see JFK.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
I completely support The Wisconsin Idea and will always be a true 'cheese head' cheerleader. If you have ever watched Jeff Daniels on Newsroom your will understand my commitment to truth and transparency.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, honesty and determination to support the people of my district.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I'm a well read, intelligent, empathetic, good listener. I am able to express myself both verbally and in writing and I am fearless.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
First and foremost an assembly person is a problem solver for the people of the district. Availability, a willingness to help and an optimistic approach to problems will make a big difference.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like the people of the district to say, "That Charlie Warner did a good job!"
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I vividly remember with awe and wonder when the Soviets launched the first satellitem called Sputnik. I was 6 or 7.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I was a clerk at my Uncle's meat market. I helped people select the best pork chops, sliced their sandwich meats, scooped up liver and hamburger. I started at 13 and worked there until I graduated from high school at 181/2.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
A non partisan system such as Iowa has used.
