Three of the five seats on the School District of Manatee County school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Four newcomers ran for the District 1 seat in the primary election on August 30, 2016: Xtavia Bailey, Gina Messenger, Linda Schaich, and Edward Viltz. Viltz and Messenger received the highest number of votes in the primary, allowing them to advance to the general. Messenger won the general election. District 3 incumbent Dave Miner filed for re-election in the primary election and was joined in the race by two challengers: Charles Conoley and Misty Servia. Miner and Servia received enough votes to advance to the general election, with Miner winning the seat.[1][2] The District 5 seat was originally set to be on the primary ballot, but when incumbent John Colon faced no opposition at the passing of the filing deadline, he was automatically re-elected. His name did not appear on the ballot and the election for the seat was canceled.
