Charles Cooper (Tennessee)
Charles Cooper (Republican Party) ran for election to the Tennessee State Senate to represent District 24. He lost in the Republican primary on August 1, 2024.
Biography
A Camden, Tennessee native, Cooper graduated from Camden Central High School in 1990.[1] He went on to study criminal law and civil litigation at Ashworth College, English common law at The University of London, paralegal studies at the Paralegal Institute, family and business mediation at Lakewood College, and American law at Penn Law.[2]
From 1992 through 2000, Cooper served in the United States Army in the Quartermaster Corps. Cooper's professional experience also includes working in law enforcement and serving as an ordained minister.[1]
As of May 2019, Cooper held leadership roles with his local Republican Party and Tea Party Organizations. He was also a member of the Benton County GOP Executive Committee. Cooper also worked as a campaign coordinator and advisor for Bruce Griffey's successful 2018 state House campaign and Mark Green's successful 2018 congressional campaign.[3] He previously served as chairman of the Benton County Republican Party before stepping down in March 2024 to run for the 24th District state Senate seat.[4]

The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was April 3, 2014. Charles Cooper was defeated by Randy Patton in the Democratic primary. Incumbent Tim Wirgau was unopposed in the Republican primary. James Hart ran as an independent candidate. Wirgau defeated Patton and Hart in the general election.[5][6]
