Candidate Connection

Charles Dudley participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 2, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Charles Dudley's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Education, a Living Wage, and Affordable Healthcare. Providing schools with the proper resources should be the legislature’s #1 priority. The education system provides the foundation for a well-trained work force bringing businesses and economic stability to our state. A living wage will help the lowest income people regain the dignity of work. Healthcare must be affordable to all people. People are not able to work and contribute to our community if they cannot maintain their health.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am most passionate about education because I know education is the shovel that digs you out of poverty. It is also the key to economic growth for our state.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Charles Dudley answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

A legislator must take their duty to their constituents seriously. That means they should be in Raleigh to represent them when the legislature meets and spend time listening to them when not in session. They should give public interests just priority and look out for the long-term interests of the state.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
As a child I got to experience first hand the integration of the schools. I was bussed to a primarily white school and I remember the fear and curiosity in the other children's eyes. They would make us sit in the back of the room (and that's how I learned I needed glasses). But there were a few bold children who decided to talk to us and we started to learn how much we had in common.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
My favorite book is "The Go-Getter" by Peter B. Kyne. It is the story of a veteran who must purchase a blue vase to impress his boss and secure his employment. He has to refuse to give up in the face of many obstacles with compromising his integrity. The book's lessons resonated so much with me that I started a blue vase award for the top 'go-getters' in my church.[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
My father was killed by gun violence when I was 21 months old and I was raised by a single mother. I have struggled with why this happened and trying to identify myself in a man I never knew since I did not have a stable father figure.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Redistricting should be handled by an independent non-partisan committee and removed from the hands of the legislature. Our legislature should not be choosing their constituents, but the constituents their legislators.[3]
