Charles E. Atwell was a circuit court judge for the 16th Circuit Court in Missouri.[1] He was appointed circuit judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit in 1996.[2] He retired on December 1, 2012.[3]

Education

Atwell earned his Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Kansas and his J.D. from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.[2]

Career

Prior to becoming a judge, he served as an assistant United States attorney, and assistant prosecuting attorney.[2] After he retired on December 1, 2012, he began practicing with Foland, Wickens, Eisfelder, Roper & Hofer.[3]

  • A member and former chairman of the Missouri Supreme Court Committee on Procedures in Criminal Cases
  • A faculty member of the Missouri Judicial College
  • Served on the faculty of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy
  • A member of the Missouri Supreme Court Committee on Gender and Justice
  • A member of the 2nd Presbyterian Church, Kansas City
  • Involved with the Williams Education Fund
  • An adviser on the 24th Street Project Boys and Girls Club[2]

Awards

In 2007, Atwell was voted Best Circuit Judge in Missouri in a survey conducted by Missouri Lawyers Weekly.[2]

2010 election

Atwell was retained on November 2, 2010, receiving 64.6 percent of the vote.[4]
