Charles E. 'Chip' Erdmann is a senior Article I federal judge serving on the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He joined the court on October 15, 2002, following a nomination from President George W. Bush. His 15-year term on the court ended on July 31, 2017.[1][2] He served as chief judge of the court from August 1, 2015, until July 31, 2017.[3]

Early life and education

Erdmann earned his bachelor's degree from Montana State University - Billings and his J.D. from the University of Montana School of Law.[4]

Military career

From 1966-1969, Erdmann fulfilled a three-year enlistment with the United States Marine Corps. In 1981, he was commissioned as an officer in the Montana Air National Guard JAG corps. Judge Erdmann retired from the Air National Guard with the rank of colonel in 2002.[4]

Professional career

Erdmann began his career as an assistant attorney general in Montana before entering into private practice in Helena, Montana. He continued in private practice until 1995, when he was appointed as an associate justice to the Montana Supreme Court. He served on that court until 1997.

In 1998, Erdmann joined the Office of High Representative (OHR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he was eventually named head of the OHR Human Rights and Rule of Law Department. In 2000, he was appointed chief judge of the Bosnia Election Court. He was the first American international judge in Bosnia. Erdmann served as chief judge of the election court until those functions were assumed by the Bosnian Supreme Court. He continued to work as a consultant on judicial reform and international law in both Bosnia and Serbia until his nomination to the federal bench.[4]

Erdmann was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces by President George W. Bush on August 1, 2002.[5] Hearings on Erdmann's nomination were held in the United States Senate Committee on Armed Services on September 27, 2002. Erdmann's nomination was reported by U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.), on October 1, 2002. Erdmann was confirmed by the full United States Senate by a voice vote on October 2, 2002.[6] On August 1, 2015, Erdmann was named chief judge of the court, a position in which he served until July 31, 2017.[3] Erdmann's term ended on July 31, 2017.[1]
