Charles Evans Whittaker (1901-1973) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States, and formerly a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit and the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. Whittaker was nominated to the court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on March 22, 1957. He retired from the court on March 31, 1962, and died on November 26, 1973.[1][2]

Whittaker was one of five justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Eisenhower. He served during The Warren Court.

Education

Whittaker received a LL.B. from the Kansas City School of Law in 1924.[1]

Professional career

Prior to joining the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit, Whittaker was an attorney in private practice in Missouri from 1924 to 1954. He served on the court from 1957 to 1962. In the years after service on the court, Whittaker was an arbitrator for the General Motors Corporation and an advisor for the Senate Committee on Standards and Conduct.[1][2]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Supreme Court

Whittaker was nominated to the Supreme Court by President President Dwight Eisenhower on March 2, 1957, to a seat vacated by Justice Stanley Reed. Whittaker was confirmed by the Senate on March 19, 1957, and received his commission on March 22nd. He assumed senior status on March 31, 1962, and resigned on September 30, 1965.[1]

Eighth Circuit

Whittaker was nominated to the Eighth Circuit by President Dwight Eisenhower on March 16, 1956, to a seat vacated by John Collet. Whittaker was confirmed by the Senate on June 4, 1956, and received his commission on June 5th. He served the Eight District until March 24, 1957, with his advancement to the Supreme Court.[1]

Western District of Missouri

Whittaker was nominated to the Western District of Missouri by President Dwight Eisenhower on May 11, 1954, to a seat vacated by Albert Reeves. Whittaker was confirmed by the Senate on July 7, 1954, and received his commission on July 8, 1954. He served the Western District of Missouri until June 21, 1956, with his elevation to the Eight Circuit.[1] Whittaker was succeeded in this position by Randle Smith.
