Charles Petros Kocoras is an Article III federal judge serving on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, one of the busiest federal district courts in the nation. He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Kocoras is serving on senior status.

Early life and education

Kocoras is a native Chicago citizen who has earned both his bachelor's and Juris Doctorate degrees from DePaul University in 1961 and in 1969.[1]

Professional career

Kocoras served in the Illinois Army National Guard from 1961-1967 in the height of the Vietnam conflict before returning to law school in 1967 at DePaul University. After his graduation from law school, Kocoras became an Private practice attorney in Chicago from 1969 to 1971. Then in 1971, Kocoras became an First assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois until 1977. From 1977 to 1979, Kocras took a two year break from being an attorney by being Chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission before having a one year stint as a private practice attorney from 1979 to 1980. Also, Kocoras has been an Adjunct professor at John Marshall Law School from 1975 to present.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Illinois

Kocoras was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on June 2, 1980 to a seat vacated by Alfred Kirkland. Kocoras was Confirmed by the Senate on September 29, 1980, and received commission on September 30, 1980. Kocoras served as chief judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois from 2002 to 2006. Kocoras assumed senior status on June 30, 2006.[1]
