Smith was defeated in the election to the 12th District Seat (Chittenden District) in 2010. He ran against Mike Branon, Shelley Palmer, Diane Snelling,Annette Roque Renaud, and Dennis Bedard in the primary. He ran against Timothy Ashe (D), Virginia Lyons (D), Hinda Miller (D), Philip Baruth (D), Sally Fox (D), Andy Montroll (D), Mike Branon (R), Shelley Palmer (R), Diane Snelling (R), Annette Roque Renaud (R), Richard Jeroloman (I), Steve Laible (I), Mikey Van Gulden (I), and Larkin Forney in the general election on November 2, 2010.
