We're going to wake up millions of people, bring them into the tent, and say that if you're living your life in peace without violence, force, fraud, coercion, or theft, your life is your life, your body is your body, your business is your business, and your property is your property. It's not mine, and it sure as hell isn't the federal government's.[1] |

—Chase Oliver (May 2024)[2] |
Chase Oliver is a Libertarian Party activist who ran in the 2022 U.S. Senate race in Georgia. Oliver announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on April 4, 2023.[3] The Libertarian Party selected Oliver as its presidential nominee on May 26, 2024, at the Libertarian National Convention. Mike ter Maat was also selected as his running mate at the national convention.[4]
Oliver completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. In his responses, he listed the following policy areas as the top three messages of his campaign: "Voters deserve a President who will respect their inherent individual rights. Our democracy is functionally broke[n] under a [two]-party system. The United States should take the lead in engendering peace both at home and abroad." When asked what qualities he possesses that would make him a successful officeholder, Oliver responded, "Empathy for those who live lives different from myself. My willingness to put myself in the shoes of others. I am also adaptable and willing to listen to those who have knowledge that I may not." Click here to read more of Oliver's responses.

Collapse all
|- Voters deserve a President who will respect their inherent individual rights.
- Our democracy is functionally broke under a two-party system.
- The United States should take the lead in engendering peace both at home and abroad.
Although this may not necessarily be a strength, Trump is open and honest about being a disruptor. I like Bush's artistic endeavors.

COST OF LIVING & INFLATION Government overspending and reckless money printing are fueling skyrocketing costs, hurting those who can least afford it. By slashing spending and balancing the budget, we can crush inflation and ignite a stronger, more vibrant economy that works for everyone. ECONOMY Americans are struggling in an economy where the government and special interests dictate the rules. To end these cycles of economic crises, we must reduce government interference and let individuals decide how to spend their hard-earned money, sparking real innovation. IMMIGRATION Our immigration system is outdated and inefficient. It’s time to break the partisan gridlock and simplify the process so immigrants can come, work, and thrive as part of our communities. Immigrants built America, and they’re key to its future. HEALTHCARE Healthcare costs are skyrocketing due to government overreach. By embracing market-driven options like Direct Primary Care and reforming drug approval processes, we can lower prices and increase access. More choices mean lower costs! EDUCATION To fix education, we need to cut federal involvement. Abolish the Department of Education, return funds to states and taxpayers, and get the government out of student loans to drive down costs. WAR & FOREIGN POLICY For too long, our nation has been entangled in endless wars, leaving scars on our veterans and their families. It’s time to pivot to a foreign policy focused on peace. We need to end drone strikes and military interventions, and instead champion free trade and international goodwill. Let’s reclaim our role as the ‘leader of the free world’ by pursuing peace and serving as a beacon of hope. INDIVIDUAL CHOICE No government should regulate personal activities or impose harsh penalties. We must end the death penalty, corporate bailouts, drug criminalization, abortion restrictions before viability, and excessive employment regulations. The government shouldn’t draft citizens, tax individuals excessively, mandate medical treatments, or censor private communication. CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM Our criminal justice system is broken and needs a radical overhaul. From courts to prisons, we must focus on empowering people, not expanding government control. America imprisons a quarter of the world’s inmates—an injustice in a nation that prides itself on freedom. We must dismantle the prison-industrial complex, end the failed War on Drugs, and eliminate qualified immunity for police. Abolishing the death penalty and ensuring police accountability are crucial steps towards a just and fair system. Let’s shift from punishment to rehabilitation and make our justice system a true beacon of freedom. PRIVACY The worst abuses often come under the guise of safety. With warrantless wiretaps, FISA court abuses, and the overreaching Patriot Act, our freedoms are under threat. As President, Chase will dismantle these invasive programs, restore your privacy rights, and pardon whistleblowers who reveal government misconduct. Your liberty is worth defending! GREEN ENERGY Chase will transform environmental policy by slashing red tape and embracing market-driven, science-backed solutions. His plan: end wars, respect tribal sovereignty, ensure energy independence, and champion smart deregulation. GUN RIGHTS You deserve the right to protect yourself from violence. History shows that gun control has often been used to limit the ability of vulnerable groups like you to defend yourself. I’m committed to ensuring you can exercise your right to self-defense, appointing judges who uphold this right, and fighting against any restrictions that undermine your safety. Let’s keep our communities secure and support your right to protection. TERM LIMITS Chase supports term limits for all federal officials—elected or appointed—to keep government fresh and accountable. Term limits ensure new perspectives and reduce wasteful spending, while agency leaders must face regular reviews for reappointment. Policy positions
Immigration
Oliver's campaign website said, "Our immigration system is a tragic mess. We simply must break the partisan logjam and bring people from all parties together to reform and modernize it. There are few better examples of “bad government” than the overly complex current laws and regulations involving immigration. The President needs to take the lead and work with Congress to radically simplify our immigration system so people can come here, work, and become members of our communities without being relegated to the shadows. Immigrants built this country, and they can help keep it growing and prospering for future generations of Americans." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Healthcare
Oliver's campaign website said, "Healthcare is too expensive because of government overregulation. We should advocate for market alternatives to heavily regulated employer-provided insurance such as the Direct Primary Care model. We should also reform how we bring new drugs to market and end practices such as patent evergreening which keep the cost of too many drugs artificially high. With more choices and free market forces, we will see a drop in the cost of healthcare overall." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Energy and environmental issues
In a debate Oliver said, "We need to have clean air and clean water. When a company poisons a community, they should be able to sue a company without any tort caps. Let a citizen jury bankrupt the polluters. That will be a free market incentive to make sure it's never happening again." [source, as of 2024-07-12]
Trade
Oliver's campaign website said he would, "Immediately end all tariffs, which serve only to increase the bottom lines of protected industries, shift labor from more efficient industries while creating a net loss of jobs, and raise prices by lowering the number of alternatives for consumers to choose among. Tariffs are a form of embargo on domestic laborers and consumers, raising the costs of doing business for importers who pass these added costs onto end-buyers." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Economy
Oliver's campaign website said, "Every day, average Americans face many challenges in our overly regulated economy where government, lobbyists, and special interests continuously conspire to pick winners and losers. From trillions of dollars in government deficits, and trillions more in unfunded liabilities, our government recklessly crowds out funding that would be better served allowing innovation in the marketplace to find solutions to our most pressing issues. To combat these constant rounds of economic and financial crises, we must get government out of our boardrooms and wallets, and allow individuals to decide how to best distribute their hard-earned dollars." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Education
Oliver's campaign website said, "At the federal level, the best policy on education is to remove the federal government’s involvement in education. I support abolishing the Department of Education and block granting those funds back to states to be returned to taxpayers. I also support getting the government out of the student loan business so market forces can lower the cost of higher education over time." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Gun regulation
Oliver's campaign website said, "I support the right of every person to defend themselves from violence and aggression. Gun control throughout our history has been used to limit the ability of vulnerable populations to defend themselves. Armed people are harder to oppress and harder to attack. I will not support any new gun restrictions and will look to repeal the restrictions that exist today. I will nominate to the judiciary judges committed to protecting the right of all persons to defend themselves from aggression. District of Columbia v. Heller was a seminal moment in our history, affirming not only the right of citizens to own arms, but determining that restrictions such as trigger locks are unconstitutional. I will work to extend this legal concept to all bans, such as bans on bump stocks." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Criminal justice
Oliver's campaign website said, "It is long past time we address the problems with our criminal justice system. From Courts to police, to prisons, we need reforms in every area with one goal in mind, empower people, not the government. With less than five percent of the world’s population, we host roughly a quarter of its prison population. That is simply unacceptable in a nation that styles itself as the land of the free. The current system feeds a prison-industrial complex that leads to the militarization of our police, corruption in our prosecutors who have perverse incentives to push for longer sentences, the building of private prisons that value profit over rehabilitation, and a cycle of incarceration that breeds lowered earnings and poverty that leads to recidivism." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Foreign policy
Oliver's campaign website said, "My entire adult life, our nation has been at war somewhere in the world. I have friends and loved ones who have served, and come home with the visible and invisible scars of combat. I’ve seen them mourn their brothers and sisters who didn’t come home. I meet more and more anti-war veterans every day, and they know more than anyone about the cost of war. It’s time we focus our foreign policy on Peace. We should end our policy of sending drones around the world and instead foster international goodwill by defending free trade and free markets. Our nation has long had the moniker ‘leader of the free world.’ It is time we earn that distinction by insisting that Peace is the way forward. End the wars. End the drones. End the policy of constant intervention. It’s easy to drop a bomb, it’s much harder to serve as a beacon of Peace. We must take the more difficult but necessary path." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Abortion
Oliver's campaign website said, "Outside of obvious criminal offenses such as assault, theft, or murder, it is not the role of government in a free society to prohibit such behavior, even when the majority wishes it so. For this reason, activities such as abortion are the province of individual choice and bodily autonomy. I recognize the complexity of this issue and how there can be good faith positions on both sides of the abortion debate. With this said, I will work to encourage states to decriminalize abortions, as these decisions should rest in the hands of individuals and their doctors. I will encourage the passage of the Hyde Amendment, which will prevent Federal dollars from funding abortion clinics. I will encourage states to incentivize alternatives to abortion, such as adoption, by easing burdensome regulations that greatly increase their cost. The median range for adopting a newborn baby is between $25,000 to $45,000, placing this avenue out of the range of many who would otherwise be willing." [source, as of 2024-07-29]
Coronavirus response
In a debate Oliver said, "If I'm elected president I'm going to appoint a special counsel from the Department of Justice to investigate everything that has gone wrong, to basically punish the wrongdoers, to find those who committed force or fraud or coercion, and punish those people. Because free people should be able to make their own medical decisions. We don't need a state apparatus telling us what to do or trying to lock us down or control us. It was one of the greatest violations of liberty in our life. We saw millions of businesses affected by arbitrary lockdowns that didn't stop the disease. We saw the attempt of OSHA to mandate behavior that individual businessowners and property owners should be able to determine for themselves, and, frankly, individuals should be able to determine for themselves." [source, as of 2024-07-12]
Government ethics
In a debate Oliver said, "Powerful interests have always controlled governments from the beginning of time. This is why government is immoral and why we should strike government down as much as possible." [source, as of 2024-07-12]

Colorado Libertarian Party votes to nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (I) over Chase Oliver (L), the party's national nominee (2024)
The Colorado Secretary of State said Chase Oliver (L) and Mike ter Maat (L) would appear on the Colorado presidential ballot as the Libertarian nominees since a representative of the national party filed paperwork for Oliver and ter Maat before the state party filed paperwork for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (I) and Nicole Shanahan (I).[17]
On June 10, 2024, the Libertarian Party of Colorado said it would not nominate Oliver and ter Maat as its presidential and vice presidential candidates in 2024.[18] On July 2, the party instead voted to nominate Kennedy and Shanahan for president and vice president.[19] Representatives from the state party said they planned to file paperwork with Colorado election officials to nominate Kennedy, while representatives from the national party said they planned to file paperwork to nominate Oliver.[20]
Libertarian Party delegates voted to select Oliver and ter Maat as the party's 2024 presidential ticket in the seventh round of voting at the Libertarian National Convention on May 26, 2024.
In a statement, the Libertarian Party of Colorado said, "This decision was not taken lightly, it reflects the will of our delegation which voted NOTA in the final round of voting and reiterates our deep concern that the national ticket does not align with the values and strategies that the LPCO holds dear."[18]
As of July 2, 2024, Oliver's campaign had not responded.[21]
