My name is Chase Porter Gay and I'm a candidate for Montana State Senate District 47. I grew up on small family farm and attended a rural public school providing me with a sense of values that I hope to bring to the Montana Legislature. I just completed my first year of law school at the University of Montana and hope to practice in a legal field involving public interest. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful and unique state and I want to fight to ensure that the very values and opportunities that make Montana such a special place remain available as we continue to grow and prosper.
  • The Montana state legislature made the right decision in 2019 by expanding Medicaid. The work on providing quality, affordable healthcare is not yet done. The cost of prescription drugs continue to rise in our state and this issue must be addressed. Legislation can be introduced to cap the costs of prescription drugs, placing more money into the pockets of our state's residents.
  • The ability to access and enjoy Montana's public lands are one of the things that make this the Last Best Place. Naturally, private interests and corporations are desperate to get their hands on what belongs to the people of our state. It is crucial that our public lands remain in public hands and that we do everything we can to protect our lands from outside interests.
  • As we await the ratification of the Water Compact at the federal level, it's important that the Montana legislature continues to respect and where possible expand tribal sovereignty. For too long, there has been a push to infringe upon tribal sovereignty and we've seen lately the Lake County Commissioners foolishly push back against the Water Compact. Fighting to protect and expand tribal sovereignty will be an absolute for me in the state legislature.
Having grown up in a rural community, I'm particularly concerned about the lack of attention paid to our small communities. Seeing funding reduced for our rural hospitals and schools is the wrong decision. We must continue to support our state's rural areas by improving the hospitals and schools, as well as offering opportunities for economic mobility for rural residents in the form of scholarships and funding to attend our state's excellent institutions of higher education.
