Candidate Connection

Chase Van Weerdhuizen participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on July 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Chase Van Weerdhuizen's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Voluntary education programs for Pre-K, investment in small agricultural businesses, and Idaho youth suicide prevention.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

The arts, resources for young families, and maintaining Idaho's rural quality of life in the face of urban expansion.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Chase Van Weerdhuizen answered the following:

(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

The House is a body that should produce a body of bills for consideration. The Senate should be the producer of more thorough legislation due to experience and size.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I believe that legislators should be elected by their constituents due to a built trust. Whether that trust comes from previous government experience or earned connections is the will of the people.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
The use of natural resources, urban expansion, and education.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
I believe that both should be in conversation, however ultimately the will of the people as directed by the legislature should be paramount in producing legislation. The governor should act as a natural check to any outlandish use of that power.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Of course, bipartisan efforts are essential to districts and their constituents.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I believe that communities should be redistricted in a way that values their voice and geographical location, rather than what is advantageous for the parties involved.[3]
