McElhiney earned an associate degree from Arapahoe Community College in 2010. She later received bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Metropolitan State University of Denver. McElhiney has worked as an early intervention service coordinator with Developmental Pathways since August 2014. She has served on the Aurora Human Relations Commission and the executive committee for Rocky Mountain Pop Warner Football.[1]
