Harris County held elections for county commission, justices of the peace, constables, district attorney, county attorney, sheriff, county tax assessor-collector, and the Harris County Department of Education Board of Trustees in 2016. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on March 1, 2016, and a primary runoff took place on May 24, 2016. The filing deadline for those wishing to run in this election was December 14, 2015.[1] Incumbent Hilary H. Green defeated Cheryl Elliott Thornton in the Harris County Justice of the Peace Precinct 7 Democratic primary runoff.

2010
Thornton was the Democratic candidate for the Harris County Court at Law, No. 2 in 2010.[2] Thornton won the Democratic primary, receiving 70.3 percent of the vote. She was defeated by Jacqueline Lucci Smith in the general election.[3][4]
Selection method
The members of the Texas Justice of the Peace Courts are elected in partisan elections and serve four-year terms. They are elected in a precinct-wide election.[5]
To serve as a justice of the peace, justices must complete a 40-hour course on relevant duties within one year of his or her election. They must also complete a similar 20-hour course each year they continue to serve.[6]
