Cheryl Matthews

Cheryl Matthews is a judge for the 6th Circuit Court in Oakland County, Michigan. She was elected to this position on November 2, 2004, and took office the following January 1.[1][2] She was re-elected in 2010 and 2016.[3]
Education
Matthews received a B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1985. In 1989, she graduated from Fordham University School of Law in New York with a J.D.[1]
Career
Matthews began her career in 1989 as an associate of Chadbourne & Parke. She became an assistant prosecuting attorney of Oakland County in October 1991. She worked in the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office until becoming a circuit court judge, serving as the chief of the Child Sexual Assault Section from June 1997 through December 2004. She was also an Instructor at the Oakland Police Academy from 1991 to 2004.[1]
Awards and associations
Matthews is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, New York State Bar, Fraternal Order of Police, Womens Bar Association, and the Oakland County Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team. She has also served as a board member of the Oakland County Child Abuse and Neglect Council (1999-2005), a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation, an appointee to the Governors Task Force on Childrens Justice (1998-2004), and a lector for St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic Church.[1]
Elections
2016
Michigan held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election occurred on August 2, 2016. The candidate filing deadline for incumbents was March 21, and the deadline for non-incumbents was April 19.[4] Incumbent Rae Lee Chabot, incumbent Hala Jarbou, incumbent Cheryl Matthews, and incumbent Daniel Patrick O'Brien were unopposed in the 6th Circuit general election (4 open seats).[3]

Matthews was re-elected (along with 4 other judges) in the general election on November 2, 2010. She received 20.94 percent of the vote.[5]
