Incumbents Christie Craig, Colleen Leary, Harry Murphy, Louis Tayon Jr., and Michael Woods faced challengers Gayle Gilmore, Sharon Johnson-Clayton, Patricia King, Bryan Miles, Luis Padilla, and Bradley Whitlow.

The Chesapeake Public Schools school board consists of nine members elected at large to four-year terms. Five seats were up for general election on May 1, 2018; there was no primary election. Qualified individuals who ran in this election were required to file by March 6, 2018.

Chesapeake Public Schools is located in Virginia. The district was the seventh-largest school district in the state in the 2014–2015 school year and served 39,707 students.[1]

In the 2016 presidential election, Virginia was a battleground state. Hillary Clinton (D) won Virginia with 49.7 percent of the vote. Donald Trump (R) received 44.4 percent. In presidential elections between 1900 and 2016, Virginia voted Democratic 56.67 percent of the time and Republican 43.33 percent of the time. In the five presidential elections between 2000 and 2016, Virginia voted Democratic three times (2008, 2012, and 2016) and Republican two times (2000 and 2004).
