One seat on the Chesterfield County Public Schools Board of Education was up for special election on March 18, 2014. Five candidates competed for the seat, vacated by Patricia M. Carpenter. Debra Girvin defeated Bill C. Colgate IV, Dianne L. Mallory-Coble, F. Gary Powers, Jr. and Bob E. Olsen to win the Midlothian district seat.

Chesterfield County Public Schools is located in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Chesterfield County is home to 327,745 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Chesterfield County Public Schools was the fifth-largest school district in Virginia and served 59,200 students.[2]

Demographics

Chesterfield County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 36.3 percent of Virginia County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Virginia County was $72,088 compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate in Virginia County was 6.7 percent compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Chesterfield County School Board consists of five at-large members that serve staggered four-year terms. The board is officially nonpartisan, though there is a history of candidates being endorsed by parties. There was no primary election, and a special election was held on March 18, 2014. One seat was up for election in 2014.[4]
