Campaign themes

2016

Khim's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • A goal that is very dear to my heart is taking part of my salary as a State Representative and setting up a scholarship for the hardworking and dedicated students of the 18th district. Students are under immense pressure to pass standardized tests. There must be a balance in educating our future generations to be knowledgable, innovative, and productive citizens of this community.

Economic

  • The economic growth and prosperity of local small businesses help build a stronger community. Walking into a small mom and pop shop where the owner knows you by name and you can order “the usual” before sitting down is the foundation for a close knit supportive community. Small businesses supports a network of neighbors that are economically and socially connected. They have a stake in the community and will help ensure that decisions about the community are made locally by people who live in the community and feel that impact of those decisions. Continuing my work with businesses of Cupples Square and utilizing that model to bridge the gap between business owners and city official for other areas of the community.

Immigration

  • The community is rich in diversity. It is all the different ethnicities that make this community great. It is a joy to be able to walk a few blocks and experience sights, sounds, and flavors of the world. My family and I are immigrants and refugees of war the same as many others that live in the community. Policies on immigration need to be fair and benevolent.

Housing

  • My family was a recipient of one of the homes from Habitat for Humanity. I can empathize with people that want a safe and decent place to live. Safe, decent, and affordable housing will give stability to the community. People will feel invested in their homes, a responsibility to keep the neighborhood safe, and the need to be an active part of the community.

Public Health

  • Substance abuse and addiction has long been in the shadows. The growing crisis in substance abuse is now here at our doorstep. No longer can we ignore or turn from this affliction. The abuse of both prescription and illicit drugs is an ongoing public health concern in Lowell and throughout the country. The diversity of the community also adds another layer of complexity in dealing with the substance abuse crisis.[1]
