The Judicial Update

July 12, 2011

Iowa: Chief Judge Robert Pratt, of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, has announced his retirement as the highest-ranking judge of that court. The 64-year-old stated that he will retire from active service on July 1, 2012 but will continue to serve as a senior judge. This senior status allows older judges the ability to hear a reduced number of cases. Pratt explained, "It is my present intention to continue to render substantial judicial service to the court as a senior judge."[1]

Pratt was first appointed to the district court by President Bill Clinton in 1997. Prior to becoming a judge, he worked for the Legal Aid Society. He has announced his retirement a year in advance to allow time to appoint a new judge.[1]
