Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye addresses Sacramento area legal community
February 11, 2011
Sacramento, California: The new Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court is encouraging the Sacramento legal community to get involved with the state judiciary. She hopes that lawyers and judges will participate in Judicial Council, by applying to serve on committees.[1]
Justice Cantil-Sakauye shared these thoughts during an interview with The Sacramento Bee. It was given prior to a gathering of 900 supporters at a dinner and celebration for her appointment as Chief Justice.[1]
Cantil-Sakauye takes office as the head of the state's judiciary with a $140 million deficit from last year's operating budget. In addition, the legislature cut $200 million from the judiciary's budget this year. Though Cantil-Sakauye reminded lawyers and judges that, "We (the judiciary) have to avoid politics," it seems to be in the best interest of the courts to get involved with the other branches of government. "We need some form of established communication with our legislative and executive partners," she stated.[1]
