Chief Justice Marshall to retire from Massachusetts high court
July 21, 2010
Massachusetts: In a surprise announcement today, Chief Justice Margaret Marshall announced she will step down from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court during a press conference.[1]
Marshall joined the court in 1996, when she was appointed by Governor William F. Weld. She became chief justice in 1999, appointed by Governor Paul Cellucci. Prior to her tenure on the court, Marshall worked in private practice and also as General Counsel of Harvard University. The school brought Justice Marshall to the U.S., which she emigrated from South Africa to attend.[2]
The Chief Justice announced her retirement in the wake of discovering that her husband had Parkinson's disease. Of her decision, she said she would leave the court, "so that Tony and I may enjoy our final seasons together."[1]
The governor, Deval Patrick will appoint a successor, with help from the Governor's Council. The Governor's Council is elected each year by the Massachusetts legislature.[3]
